Getting fresh-air and exercise on a close-to-home trail is a treat. But when it's as beautiful in all seasons as the newly accredited Courtown/Kiltennel trail, you know it's time to get outside.
After 2 years in development, Courtown Community Council is delighted to announce that the beautiful and unique Courtown/Kiltennel Walking Trail has received it's official accreditation from Sport Ireland and has been added to the National Trails Register.
Courtown Community Council chair Linda told us:
“We're delighted to see so many people enjoying the trail already. Walking Trails have proved hugely popular since the beginning of the pandemic. There's no better way to immerse yourself in nature than to spend some time ambling throughout Courtowns extensive walking trail network.”
Indeed, North Wexford's embrace of the Courtown trail is readily apparent. Day in day out, it draws frequent use by walkers of all ages, trail-runners, dogwalkers, and a multitude of families heading to and from the beach. A favourite with locals and holiday-makers alike, its value is found in its accessibility - only a few minutes walk from Courtown Carpark and the Harbour - and its unique mixture of dunes, woodland and beach.
Part of a designated Natural Heritage Area (Courtown Dunes & Glen), CCC works hand in hand with Wexford Co Council, Wexford Walking Trails and the NPWS to restore and maintain this beauty spot. As a community-managed project, it's also become a symbol of Courtown's potential renaissance.
The trail's value is also evident in a palpable change of attitude, a new spirit of hope in Courtown. Local teacher & frequent dog walker Andrea McCorry agrees:
""It's a fantastic trail to walk the dog, get some exercise and recharge the batteries after a busy day. But it's also something to be proud of. It really makes you feel good, because you're supposed to be proud of where you live."
